The C4 Rice Project aims to improve photosynthetic efficiency in rice and thus to enhance crop yields. Without a doubt it is a ‘Grand Agricultural Challenge’. Initiated during a workshop at the International Rice Research Institute in 2006, and funded by the Gates Foundation since 2008, the project has engaged over 20 research groups from more than 15 institutions across 8 countries in 4 continents.
